Information for Artists

A juried committee meets once each year to select art for exhibit in the gallery. Submissions are reviewed in March, and artists will be notified and materials returned by April 15 of each year.

We feature six exhibits per year, each artist exhibits for two months. The exhibit cycle begins in January. We work with each selected artist to set the specific dates for hanging and taking down each exhibit. The gallery has approximately 90 lineal feet of exhibit space. Occasionally we select group exhibits which share the gallery space and also run for two months.

Artists wishing to submit their work for our annual review are asked to send the following between December 1 and February 28:

  • An artist's statement. (A resume is optional.)
  • A narrative explaining the focus and content of the proposed exhibit.
  • A minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 images (slides, photographs or jpegs are acceptable) of your work that reflect the content/theme/materials for the proposed exhibit. Attaching documents and images to an e-mail or mailing a CD is preferred (5-10 images specific to the proposal). Please indicate the size of the proposed artwork. Do not use Web sites.
  • A self-addressed stamped envelope, if you want your materials returned.
  • Mail proposals to:

Due to the special nature of the Arboretum, the committee seeks work that is in concert with the Arboretum's mission and purpose such as themes, explorations and materials that focus on plants, animals and landscapes that are native (especially to Wisconsin and/or the Midwest) and that consider the relationship between humans and the land.

Artists (or their designees) are responsible for getting their exhibit to the Arboretum, hanging their exhibit and taking down their exhibit. Exhibits must be hung and removed on the agreed-upon dates.

Due to the structure of the gallery, we can only accept wall-hung art.

We use a Griplock® hanging system. Artists must have enough material to exhibit in 90 linear feet of wall space.

Please note we do not have facilities to store your exhibit before or after the exhibit dates.

We reserve the right to reject any work that is not in keeping with the agreed-upon theme or is in conflict with the Arboretum's mission/purpose.
