WOODLAND RESTORATION INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP > HOW TO RESTORE WOODLAND AT YOUR SCHOOL > STUDY THE SITE > LIGHT - SUN EXPOSURE

Identify areas of sun and shade to determine the light conditions of your site. Observe the light conditions at different times of the day and of the year. The hours and angle of sunlight changes with the seasons. Some areas shaded most of one day may be in full sun other times of the year, or areas sunny in the spring may be shady in summer. Read the following descriptions to identify the light conditions you have. Then locate these areas on an overlay map.

Full Sun - Areas receive 12 hours of sun per day in the summer.

Sun - Areas receive 6 to 8 hours of sun per day during the growing season.

Partial shade - Partially shaded areas receive 3 to 6 hours of sun per day.

Shade - Areas of shade receive less then 3 hours of direct sun.
