"A Bear in My Bed and a Jackal in My Oven: Reintroduction of Endangered and Extinct Animal Species to Israel" presented by Avinoam Lourie

Please join us as we celebrate another year of providing interesting and enlightening programs, activities and trips for our members and financial and volunteer support for the Arboretum. We will start the day at 9 a.m. with a delicious buffet breakfast, followed by a short business meeting. The highlight of the morning will be a presentation from Avinoam Lourie. Avinoam is the retired director for Wild Animal Protection for the Israel Nature and National Parks Authority, the Haifa Zoological Garden and the Israel Center for Biology Education. He has conducted research on Mediterranean fish in the Suez Canal, discovered 19 new fish species along the coast of Israel, participated in developing antivenins for poisonous snakes and scorpions throughout the Middle East, is an expert witness in poaching cases, and was recently selected as one of the 50 most influential people in Haifa.

He lectures widely and writes frequently on the animals of Israel, was invited to develop a system of nature preserves in Liberia, and played a key role in the restoration of several endangered and threatened species populations in Israel. Known as the Israeli "Dr. Doolittle," his presentations are heartwarming, interesting, often hilarious tales of his experiences with nature and Israel's fascinating wildlife; he talks about these subjects with wit, humor and sensitivity.
