Nature Photography Group
For more than 20 years, members of Friends interested in nature photography have met at the Arboretum to sharpen their technical skills and share their work with fellow members. Members range from novice photographers to highly regarded nature photographers who have exhibited in various venues around the area -- and beyond.
The group currently meets at 7 p.m. in the Arboretum Visitor Center on the third Wednesday of each month from September through May. Programs are informative and inspiring and often feature guest experts. For more information, call 608-263-7760, or send an e-mail to friends@uwarboretum.org

The February meeting of the Friends of the Arboretum Nature Photography Group will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 15 at the Arboretum Visitor Center. Michael Engelberger, an FOA member, will share his images of wildlife and landscapes of the UW-Madison Arboretum and natural areas in Dane and Iowa Counties. Clarity is what he prefers in his images. When photographing wildlife he tries to capture certain behaviors or unique poses including animals and birds feeding, fighting and moving. His love for nature and photography along with extensive traveling has given him great satisfaction in capturing our natural wonders. His focus is to capture subjects as natural and clearly as possible therefore he does a minimum amount of adjusting of his digital images. Several of his images have been displayed in galleries throughout the Madison area, currently they are on display at Gwen's Frame Shop on Main Street in Stoughton.

The March meeting of the Friends of the Arboretum Nature Photography Group will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 21 at the Arboretum Visitor Center. Amateur photographers Mark Weller and John Rummel will share their images and experiences trying to capture a killer shot of the Milky Way. This simple quest lead them on an eight year adventure in search of Wisconsin's darkest skies in a tale filled with fascinating characters, scientific inquiry, bear attacks, a cabinet level secretary and ultimately to the farthest reaches of Wisconsin: Lake Superior's Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. In the end, not only did they get their shot, they also created an iconic series of lighthouse photographs draped with the magic of the night skies.

Jerry Bisgard, a UW Professor Emeritus, has traveled with his wife to visit their daughter and her family in South Africa 15 times over the last 21 years. At the April 18th meeting of the FOA Photography group he will present a photographic tour of South Africa. South Africa is a dynamic country which is continuing to emerge from apartheid. There have been great strides in improving conditions in the country. However, there remains much to do to improve racial, economic, education and public health concerns. South Africa contains a diverse landscape with rich farm land, mining, mountains, deserts, subtropical bush country and many well managed wildlife parks and reserves. The east coast is warmer and more tropical under the influence of the Indian Ocean, while the west coast is exposed to the colder Atlantic Ocean. Johannesburg is the hub of African commerce with a vibrant mix of European and African influences. Cape Town is the African equivalent of San Francisco with its beautiful bays, harbors and Table Mountain dominating the landscape. Wine country is nearby. Jerry will present photos of the urban and rural landscapes as well as the people and wildlife of this beautiful country. A few photos of nearby Zimbabwe and the famous Victoria Falls on the Zambezi river will be included. The meeting will be held at the Arboretum Visitor Center at 7 p.m. on April 18, 2012. The meeting is open to the public.
Wednesday, May 16, 2012
