A Call for Artists

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2012

A juried committee meets once each year to select art for exhibit in the Arboretum Steinhauer Trust Gallery. Submissions are reviewed in April, and artists will be notified and materials returned by May15 of each year.

We feature six exhibits per year, each artist exhibits for two months. The exhibit cycle begins in January. We work with each selected artist to set the specific dates for hanging and taking down each exhibit. The gallery has approximately 90 lineal feet of exhibit space. Occasionally we select group exhibits which share the gallery space and also run for two months.

Artists wishing to submit their work for our annual review are asked to send the following betweenMarch 1 and March 28. – An artist’s statement. (A resume is optional.) – A narrative explaining the focus and content of the exhibit. – A minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 images (slides, photographs or jpegs are acceptable) of your work that reflect the content/theme/materials for the proposed exhibit. – A website or CD is preferred, with 5-10 images specific to the proposal. Please indicate the size of the proposed artwork. – A self-addressed stamped envelope, if you want your materials returned.

Due to the special nature of the Arboretum, the committee seeks work that is in concert with the Arboretum’s mission and purpose such as themes, explorations and materials that focus on plants, animals and landscapes that are native (especially to Wisconsin and/or the Midwest) and that consider the relationship between humans and the land.

Artists (or their designees) are responsible for getting their exhibit to the Arboretum, hanging their exhibit and taking down their exhibit. Exhibits must be hung and removed on the agreed-upon dates.

Due to the structure of the gallery, we can only accept wall-hung art. We use a Griplock® hanging system. Artists must have enough material to exhibit in 90 linear feet of wall space.

Please note we do not have facilities to store your exhibit before or after the exhibit dates.

We reserve the right to reject any work that is not in keeping with the agreed-upon theme or is in conflict with the Arboretum’s mission/purpose.

If you have questions, please contact Molly Fifield Murray, gallery committee chair. Located in the Arboretum Visitor Center, 1207 Seminole Highway, Madison, the Steinhauer Gallery is open during regular Visitor Center hours – 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 12:30 to 4 p.m. weekends.

The gallery has a two-fold purpose—to celebrate Wisconsin’s natural heritage and the human connection to the land through the visual arts, and to showcase the creativity and talent of artists who draw their inspiration from nature. Most items on exhibit are for sale. Those interested in purchasing are asked to contact the artist. Profits from sales support Arboretum projects.
