New Entrance for Longenecker Horticultural Gardens

Construction is nearly finished on an entrance feature highlighting Longenecker Horticultural Gardens and the generosity of the Friends of the Arboretum. A stone wall and metal arch delineates the main path into the original lilac and shrub beds designed by G. William Longenecker in 1935. Gift funds are being raised through the purchase of memorial benches, arches, named gardens, and memorial trees. The first goal of the fund raising is an endowment to support a curator for the gardens. The arches and benches have been designed by local artist, Michael Burns. Construction of the wall was handled by Homburg Construction Company and facilitated by UW-Madison Facilities Planning and Management. The wall was designed by Rhonda James, landscape architect with Facilities Planning and Management.

Located between Lake Wingra and the West Beltline Highway at 1207 Seminole Highway, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum features the restored prairies, forests and wetlands of pre-settlement Wisconsin. This 1,260-acre arboretum also houses flowering trees, shrubs and a world-famous lilac collection. Educational tours for groups and the general public, science and nature-based classes for all ages and abilities, and a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for groups, families and individuals are available.
