  • To celebrate the statewide Aldo Leopold Weekend, there will be a participatory public reading of <i>A Sand County Almanac</i> and other works on Saturday, March 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Arboretum Visitor Center auditorium.
  • Free, narrated tours of the Arboretum aboard the Badger Trolley leave from the Visitor Center at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. on  May 19 - last trips of the spring. Pick up your free ticket at the Visitor Center on the day of the tour. First come, first served.
  • November 10 – Saturday, 12:30-4:30 p.m.
Arboretum Class: “Effigy Mounds Builders and the Archeology of Wisconsin”   Enrollment is limited. Registration required.
  • Tour of the Lost City
Sunday, October 28 • 1 pm – 3 pm
Learn more about this failed 1920s residential area and how understanding the land can be important for proper development.Program will start indoors.

  • On  December 31 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. join us for our annual New Years' Eve walk. Meet at the Visitor Center.
  • The Land Ethic
Tuesday, August 23 • 6 pm – 8 pm

This presentation and discussion will explore Leopold’s Land Ethic and its implications in addressing today’s environmental issues. What does living a land ethic really mean and how can we practice the land ethic in our everyday lives?
  • 1. use complete sentences
2. start with "On (day of week/month/number), join us for (title of walk in quotes), a naturalist-led walk (description). Meet at the Visitor Center (or wherever).
  • If you would like to provide a valuable service to the Arboretum, the volunteer steward program may be for you. A new class of stewards will be trained starting March 8. Contact Judy Kingsbury at <a href="mailto:jakingsb@wisc.edu">jakingsb@wisc.edu</a> or 608-262-5604.
  • Prescribed fire experiments began at the Arboretum in the early 1940s. Central Curtis Prairie was burned April 24--west Curtis on May 4 this spring, leading to curiosity -- and lots of questions. Follow the "read more" link for more information.
  • On Saturday June 20 join the work party for the Grady Tract 9 a.m. to noon.  Meet at the parking lot at the corner of Seminole Hwy. and the Beltline frontage road.
  • Sunday October 21, free, narrated tours of the Arboretum aboard the Badger Trolley leave from the Visitor Center at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Pick up your free ticket at the Visitor Center on the day of the tour. Friends of the Arboretum provides funding for this program.
  • It's skiing and snowshoeing season at the Arboretum. When we get a good snow like this, please stay on the trails and review our skiing and snowshoeing policy by clicking on the "read more" link.
  • Lace up your running shoes or hiking boots, mark your calendar for Saturday, April 13, and be part of the Friends of the Arboretum's "Spring Sprint for the Arb."
  • Register for "All About Bluebirds" an Arboretum class offered Saturday APRIL 6.
  • On Sunday, November 4, from 1- 2:30 p.m. join us for a free naturalist led walk, "The CCC at the Arboretum,  about Camp Madison and the 200 men who helped plant the first restorations.
  • Enjoy the bookstore, art gallery and introductory film at the Visitor Center open 9:30 to 4 week days and 12:30 to 4 week ends. The Visitor Center will be CLOSED on Labor Day, September 5.

Restored prairie, savanna and wetlands near the Visitor Center provide an example of what Dane County looked like in the 1830s.
  • Please register in advance for, "All About Owls" an Arboretum class offered Saturday, November 3.
  • On Sunday January 6 at 1:00 p.m. join us for a naturalist led walk, Phenology Keeping note of when natural events occur each year began here with Aldo Leopold.
  • On Sunday January 13 at 1:00 p.m. join us for a free public walk, Looking for Animal Signs, such at these holes made by Pileated Woodpeckers.
  • Join us Sunday January 20 at 1 p.m. for "Winter Water" a free naturalist led walk.
  • On Sunday April 14 from 1:30 to 2:30 join us for All About Frogs Family Walk. Join us as we learn why frogs sing in the spring and other fascinating facts about their lifestyle.
  • Join us Saturday April 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Arboretum Visitor Center for a screening of Green Fire!
See the first full-length, high-definition documentary film ever made about legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold and his environmental legacy!
  • On Sunday May first join us for a free naturalist led walk, "The Flowers of May Day" from 1:00 -2:30 p.m. Many woodland flowers such as Dutchman's Breeches are in bloom.
  • On Sunday May 22 from 1:00-3:00 p.m.walk with the naturalist to Noe Woods and west Curtis Prairie. Wild geraniums and other wildflowers will be featured.
  • Wednesday evening June 13 at 7 p.m. the Garden Walk looks at the prairie and savanna gardens in the Native Plant Gardens around the Visitor Center.
  • The Lost Lady Bug project Sunday from 12:30 to 3:30 is especially for families. At this program we will learn about the different kinds of ladybugs and about how we can be citizen scientists and help professional scientists gather needed information. During the walk from 1:30-2:30 we will try to find some ladybugs.
  • On Sunday May 27 from 1-2:30 p.m. join the naturalist for a walk on West Curtis Prairie. White flowers abound including white false indigo.
  • Join us May 25 Saturday 6:30-8 p.m. for an evening walk. Naturalists will talk about evening bird song and the flowers that can be seen on an May evening
  • Sunday July 31 at 1 p.m. join the naturalist for a walk on Curtis Prairie. Bee balm, blazing stars, false sunflowers and many other species are in bloom.

We’ve gathered experts to lead you step-by-step through developing, maintaining and improving your native garden.
  • Sign up for an Arboretum class: Fungi Foray October 13 – Saturday 10 am – 12:30 pm. Fee $18. Learn some basic fungal facts.
  • On Sunday December 2 at 1 p.m., join us for a guided walking tour among the effigy mounds in Wingra and Gallistel Woods.
  • The tupelo tree outside the Visitor Center is reaching peak fall color. Other trees with remaining color include many sugar maples in Wingra and Gallistel woods.
  • Join us Sunday November 18 from 1-2:30 p.m. for a naturalist led walk, "Thinking Like an Arboretum" based upon Aldo Leopold's famous essay, "Thinking like a Mountain."
  • Join us Sunday December 11 at 1 p.m. for a free naturalist-led walk, Winter Birds. Meet at the Visitor Center
  • Join us Sunday December 16 from 1 - 2:30 p.m. for a free naturalist led walk about conifers. Meet at the Visitor Center.
  • Join us Sunday November 11 from 1 - 2:30 p.m.for a Fall Woodlands walk. Meet at the Visitor Center.
  • Join us Sunday, December 18 • 1 pm – 2:30 pm for a free naturalist-led walk: “Overwintering.”
Explore the prairies, woodlands and savannas near the Visitor Center and observe the winter survival strategies used by native plants and animals.
  • Join us on Saturday January 26 at 6:30 p.m. for a night walk, "First Bear Moon" Meet at the Visitor Center.

  • A Woodland Wildflower Walk at 1:00 pm on Sunday is a great way to see this Prairie trillium and others.
  • On Wednesday May 30 at 7 p.m. join us for a tour of Longnencker Gardens featuring the conifer collection.
  • Join us Sunday, June 10, at 1 p.m. for a tour of Curtis Prairie. False white indigo is blooming spectacularly in the Nursery addition.
  • Join us Wednesday June 20 at 7 p.m. for a guided walk to see what's blooming in the Native Plant Garden or at 8 p.m. for the Solstice Walk.
  • Join us Sunday August 26 12:30-3:30 p.m. for an Earth Partnership for Families program on Bumble bees.
  • The Arboretum Visitor Center is open week days 9:30 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. and week ends 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. Closed for state holidays.
  • Join us on Sunday December 9 at 1 p.m. for a free naturalist led walk, Winter Birds. Pine siskens such as this have been seen near Teal Pond.
  • Saturday is the Madison Area Christmas Bird Count. Arboretum counters will meet in the parking lot at 8 a.m. December 15.
  • A new exhibit has gone up in the Steinhauer Trust Gallery. Wisconsin- A State of Solitude by Mike Murray will be displayed until the end of April. This photo is titled Devils Sunrise.
  • Join us Sunday April 28 at 1 p.m. for a free naturalist led Woodland Wildflower Walk.
  • The Arboretum Visitor Center is open week days 9:30 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. and week ends 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. Closed holidays.
  • Crabapples are in full bloom in Longenecker Horticultural Gardens. Lilacs have join Redbuds in adding some more color and laate magnolias survived the cool weather last week end.
  • Featured Artist in the Steinhauer Trust Gallery for May and June is Elizabeth Ivers, whose watercolors emphasize the beauty of Madison's lake environments. The Gallery is open 9:30 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. weekdays and 12:30-4:00 p.m. weekends.
  • Lilacs and redbuds are in full bloom. Azaleas are starting and crabapples are finishing. A beautiful time to walk in Longencker Gardens!
