Spring Wildflowers at the Arboretum
Yellow star grass, Hypoxis hirsuta. This small, native perennial plant grows to 8 inches tall. Flowers are about 3/4 inch across. Its blooms appear from mid-spring through early summer and last about a month. It can be found in mesic black soil prairies, hill prairies, savannas, open woodlands and paths through woodlands, fens and sandstone glades.
