An Illustrated Guide to the Native Plant Garden by Susan Carpenter

This May scene from the Front Entrance Garden shows spiderwort (_Tradescantia ohiensis_) with blue flowers and pink prairie phlox (_Phlox pilosa_). The tall plant (rear center) is bee balm (_Monarda fistulosa_), not yet in bloom. In the foreground, Penn sedge (_Carex pensylvanica_) forms a ground cover. This site has heavy soil, with full sun for much of the day.
